Authors: Yao, Shuai
Advisor: Nagel, Jody Jay, 1960-
Date of Object: 2011-07-23
Abstract: The goal of this paper is to introduce my original concept and intention of my overture, Finding a Lost Memory; present my musical ideas and compositional techniques; and, as well, to examine the cultural and musical influences on my work. The introduction of the paper gives a brief definition, background, and historical development of the concert overture. A general overview of the compositional aspects of concert overtures is included and the goals for my particular overture are mentioned. The bulk of the paper is broken into two sections: Section One discusses Chinese cultural and Western musical influences in the piece; Section Two focuses on the compositional processes of the piece, taking into consideration harmony, structure, and orchestration. The conclusion summarizes the discussion and tells about my creative ideas and musical plans for the future.
