Abstract:
The purpose of this research project was to determine if Title IX has affected the number of female coaches employed in the 15 schools representing The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference. From this project, 13 athletic directors from The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference completed and returned a survey entitled "Athletic Director Participation Survey".Research question number one addressed whether the number of female coaches in The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference had increased since the implementation of Title IX. Eight of the athletic directors indicated that the number of female head coaches had increased and 10 indicated that the number of female assistant coaches had increased.The second research question addressed whether the number of varsity sports for women had decreased since the implementation of Title IX. All 13 respondents indicated that the number of varsity sports for women had increased.The third research question addressed whether the number of varsity sports for men had increased since the implementation of Title IX. Five of the athletic directors replied that the number of varsity sports for men had increased.
