Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine specific musical aspects of educational songs frequently used in primary elementary classrooms to teach academic subjects. Eleven songs were chosen for examination through a survey of sixty two kindergarten, first grade and second grade elementary teachers in Marion Community Schools. Three elementary music teachers evaluated each song to determine the vocal range and vocal model of each song. Based on the data collected, only nine percent of the educational songs examined use an appropriate vocal range for children and only forty-six percent of the educational songs examined use an appropriate vocal model for children.
