Abstract

The primary purpose of this study is to examine the training of staff for summer recreational youth camps held on college campuses. This study also compares the staff training of each camp to its number of campers' injuries that required outside medical treatment. Currently there is not a listing of universities that hold summer recreational youth camps; this study will provide a listing of those who belong to the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association. Other areas examined were the hiring of staff and the safety aspects of the camps being questioned. The researcher created a twenty-question survey that was designed to assess the effectiveness of staff training of the camps and the hiring process of the staff. Participants were the directors of summer recreational youth camps of 47 institutions. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results indicated that safety was of the highest priority to the camp directors during staff training sessions.
