Abstract

Promoting positive health outcomes among heart failure (HF) patients involves monitoring self care behaviors. Knowledge may provide the foundation for patients with HF to perform appropriate self-care behaviors and manage HF. The purposes of this descriptive correlational study are to examine the relationship between knowledge of HF and performance of self-care behaviors and determine the frequency of performance of self-care behaviors for HF management. This is a partial replication of Artinian, Magnan, Sloan, and Lange's (2002) study. The framework is Orem's Theory of Self Care. The anticipated sample (n = 80) will be drawn from an outpatient HF clinic setting in a community in Tennessee. Criteria for inclusion are a primary or secondary diagnosis of HF by either ICD code or ejection fraction less than 40%, New York Heart Association Class II, III, or IV, age over 18 years, and scheduled outpatient for the HF clinic. The Revised Heart Failure Self-Care Behavior Scale will be utilized to measure self-care behaviors. The patient's knowledge of HF will be assessed using the Heart Failure Knowledge Test. This study is significant because findings will provide information about knowledge and the relationship to self-care behaviors.
