Abstract

The development of this thesis dealt with defining and solving a complex architectural problem; and giving an order to a process allowing me to arrive at an outcome that answers the problems raised in a sympathetic and knowledgeable manner. The facility proposed here is designed to house the governmental functionings of Porter County and the City of Valparaiso and the spaces and services they require to operate efficiently. The major parts of the project are a government office block of 50,000 square feet, a council chamber of 2500 square feet, a 36,000 square foot auditorium for public and private use, and sheltered parking for 250 automobiles at 94,500 square feet; bringing the total size of the project to 183,000 square feet, for an estimated cost of $10,350,000.This book is a record of the evaluation of the project from initial analysis to final detailed design. It is organized to allow the reader to first see the final design, followed by sections which illustrate the phases of development which brought about the solution. Detailed information and analysis is compiled in the appendix section at the back of the book, and includes specifics relating to users, background information, programatic requirements, building type analysis, and site data.
