Abstract

Beginning with Robert and Helen Lynd's first sociological study in 1929, all aspects of Muncie were examined, including the role of local women. Deemed "the typical American city," this research has led to Muncie's nickname, "Middletown." Over the years, the Lynds examined aspects of the city's women such as how often they cleaned, or how many had careers. The women of Muncie, however, can hardly be identified by statistics. Every community is full of amazing women, and Muncie is no exception. A collaborative book, Women of Middletown: A Celebration of Spirit and Place, will work to truly identify and praise some of the current women in this community. The book will recognize the accomplishments of 70 different Muncie women through interviews and photographs. In order to assist with this important recognition, I have developed a compilation of twelve photographs of Muncie women. These black and white photos were taken to display the unique aspects of each person, acting as a visual counterpart to their story. Through these photos, those reading Women of Middletown: A Celebration of Spirit and Place will be able to visually understand the exceptional qualities of the women of Muncie.
