Abstract

This paper is intended to summarize the process and need of brownfield redevelopment. It explores the negative impacts that real or perceived contaminated sites have on local communities, and it explains the processes, policies, laws, regulations, and actions that must be taken in order to cleanup a contaminated site to levels that are environmentally acceptable and economically beneficial for a community. Along with these explanations, schemes to market these properties and devices used to protect investors, developers, and purchasers are discussed in detail. Finally, negative and positive effects are summarized in order for the reader to see why brownfield redevelopment is a worthy activity.
