Abstract

Issues dealing with animals are commonly overlooked and ignored by the public and by the government. This is why there are so many problems with the animal shelters in this country. This holds true in Muncie, where the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Delaware County was recently investigated for charges of animal cruelty and neglect. In light of this investigation, the SPCA of Delaware County has closed their doors effective May 2003. With no other plans, the county is left without animal control and an animal shelter. Perhaps this is just what Muncie needed though? By looking at what other shelters have done to improve their adoption rates and decrease their need for euthanasia as a means of making room and coming up with ideas of their own, all animal shelters, including Muncie's, could get on the path to no-kill. Hopefully the day will come when all adoptable animals that enter a shelter in any city will be guaranteed a home.
