dc.description.abstract This paper is a study of the diplomatic relations between the United States and China in the period from 1944 leading up to the Communist take-over of the mainland in 1949. As will be established, it has been well agreed upon that what America did do had no appreciable effect upon the Communist take-over, which leads to the obvious question - could something else have been done? This study is directed towards the search for an answer to that question.
