Abstract

Service learning is a technique that enables teachers to combine the academic curriculum with community service. Although this type of learning began in the 19th century, it is becoming more predominant in classrooms across the nation. Because it provides benefits to students of a variety of backgrounds and ability levels, service learning is one method of teaching, which allows students to relate positively to the world beyond the classroom. After an examination of the benefits of service learning, a personal account of my experiences implementing this type of learning in a fifth grade classroom is included. Additionally, there is a handbook included to help teachers begin a service-learning program of their own.
