Abstract
Many, low-income urban communities are characterized by high crime, substance abuse, poverty, poor health, inadequate education, and dilapidated environmental conditions. A lack of assets prevents these communities from altering the state of their condition. Sandtown-Winchester, located in Baltimore, Maryland is one of these communities. However, farmers’ markets help build assets and provide a useful tool in community development. This creative project examines the potential obstacles to establishing farmers’ markets in low-income communities and suggests guidelines for their success. The research steers a farmers’ market site design for Sandtown, illustrated with a master plan, sections, and perspectives. Hopefully, the information provided will spark interest and discussion in the possibility of a farmers’ market for Sandtown and demonstrate the importance of farmers’ markets in urban communities.
