Abstract:
This paper focuses on Hovland’s unaccompanied works for mixed choir. I discussed selected pieces from a conductor’s point of view with special attention on their practicality for performance and performing forces. Additional analysis includes a conductor’s score study for the performing group such as harmony, musical form, and text painting. The paper is on the following works written for unaccompanied mixed choir: “The Glory of the Father;” “How Long, O Lord;” “I Know of a Lovely Flower;” “Now Hail the Joyous Day;” “Jerusalem;” and “Karin Boye’s Evening Prayer.” The pieces have been examined individually and compared to the broader scope of Hovland’s output of choral works.
