Abstract:
This project has studied and presented the history and performance practices of Richard
Strauss’ Concerto for Horn, No.1, Op.11. Composed when Strauss was still a teenager, the work was greatly influenced by his father, Franz, who was a notable horn player. Though the style of the piece is classical, Strauss does not strictly follow classical tradition in the form of the work.
Many horn players have performed and recorded the concerto, including Dennis Brain, Barry Tuckwell, and Radek Baborak. The differences and similarities in these recordings shed light on the performance practice of the concerto.
