Abstract

Light and Dark is a two-movement work for woodwind quartet that utilizes a variety of methods to subtly distinguish the concepts after which the piece is named. Although the movements share a number of similarities, including the use of the (0257) tetrachord and an overall style and tempo, the piece uses varying instrumentation, spacing of pitches, and directions of motion between the movements, which are respectively titled “Light” and “Dark.” Additionally, Light and Dark is designed to be a circular piece, such that each movement can be repeated seamlessly as many times as the performers desire, and the entire piece can also be performed in such a way. In order to aid with the circular design, each movement is an approximate retrograde of itself.
