Abstract:
This creative project is a collection of poems that look at personal and family histories and Indiana cultural icons. These poems explore various aspects of Indiana’s often overlooked African American and metropolitan cultural heritage through a retracing of personal cultural geography. Employing diverse forms and subject matters, from the Indiana Pacers to the phenomenon of “creek walking,” this creative project navigates the experiences of an African American woman/writer coming of age in a place not known for its artistic prowess and where few artistic representations reflect contemporary African American life.
