Abstract:
The mixing of chemical solutes and solvents has been practiced for millennia. Modern techniques are much more advanced and have more specific purposes behind the mixtures that are created. A large industry within chemical organic synthesis is geared towards the production of chemical compounds that contain antidepressant capabilities. These compounds have the ability to alleviate psychological symptoms associated with clinical depression. Interestingly, known antidepressant compounds have numerous analogs that have not been produced yet. Progress in this field has shown that these analogs are highly likely to function similarly if not better than the original compound. I have pursued the organic synthesis of some antidepressant compounds that share similarities with the well-known pharmaceutical antidepressants Prozac and Cymbalta.
