Abstract

The art of letterpress printing and book binding, otherwise referred to as the book arts, is gaining popularity among young artists and the field is growing rapidly. Much of the artform is trial and error, without much analysis of practical ways to save time, effort, and resources. This handbook offers mathematical solutions to common printing and binding problems, as well as tips on how to increase efficiency and rethink old points of view. Using theorems, formulas, and concepts from geometry, statistics, calculus, and other math subjects, this handbook seeks to help book artists improve and grow in their ability to print and bind books.
