dc.description.abstract This project presents lesson plans that contribute to the pedagogy of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and particularly targets university ESL/EFL writing produced by students of Arabic language background. The goal is to help these students improve academic writing as a specific skill by addressing their need to understand and incorporate text organization devices in their writing. This is done by providing lesson plans and classroom suggestions that give students opportunities to learn about English writing conventions (schema) that give significant meaning to native or fluent English speakers, but are not used the same way in Arabic. The conventions include some of the most difficult strategies and linguistic (discourse) signals for these students to acquire, such as punctuation, transitions, article usage, and organizational patterns. This project has been inspired and informed by research and findings in applied linguistics, specifically second language acquisition, first language acquisition, and formal logic, as well as theories in perception, cognition, and information processing.
