Abstract

For some time there has been concern among Indiana newspaper executives over the lack of Negroes in their newsrooms. Seldom does a group of Hoosier publishers, editors or managing editors gather that discussion does not turn to the problem.A few publishers have been able to recruit and to train black students as reporters, drawing mostly on high school students. But, the majority have not been able to attract Negroes to the newspaper field although they have spread the word that jobs are available.Even those publishers who have been successful in recruiting black journalists have often seen their newfound employee move on to metropolitan papers or to other fields, usually because of higher pay and better fringe benefits.Although the problem of Negro employment is one of general concern, there is little literature available on which to base any presentation. With this in mind, the writer decided to survey the newspaper executives themselves as a matter of obtaining an up-to-date picture of the status of Negroes in the newsrooms.(The problem was to learn how many Negroes are employed in editorial jobs on the state's 81 daily newspapers, and to get an idea of the attitudes of the employers toward hiring more black journalists.
