Abstract:
It is the purpose of this paper to give a researched report of the population and employment in Delaware County, Indiana, for the period from 1958 to 1968. The problem of this study will be to define, investigate, and explain any significant trends or relationships that exist in this area for the ten year period. The economic well-being of a community depends on the constant awareness of its manpower make up. The community must continually tune itself to take maximum advantage of its human resources in order to provide the most desirable way of life for its inhabitants. It is hoped that this paper will contribute to that awareness. The implications and significance of such a study will be realized only after completion and analysis of the research has resulted in a more productive understanding of the economic data presented. It is the goal of the writer to provide a much needed analysis of population and employment in Delaware County for all of those who could put such information to productive use. The results of such use would be to provide more and better employment to the residents of Delaware County. The need for research of this kind stems from the lack of existing information that is both up-to-date and readily available for use without consultation with several dozen suppliers of piecemeal data which must be edited and compiled before it can be used. There is an especially urgent need for accurate population statistics at this time, because of the unreliability of the 1960 census statistics and the feeling that to wait until the 1970 figures are available would be to wait too long. There is also a serious question among various authorities as to the reliability of the information coming from independent calculations. Through a thorough unbiased study of this type, it is hoped that some questions will be cleared up.
