Our society is moving faster and faster and people are becoming more mobile each year. The teacher is more likely to not be a long-time resident and well-known member of the community. It is even likely that he doesn't live within the boundries of the school system where he teaches. Therefore, parents often "don't know" the teacher of their child. Likewise the teacher might not really know the child or his family. Adding to this dilemma, in the fact that the Wily may be even more mobile than the teacher. In the writers school-community situation, PTA used to Provide a common meeting ground for parents and teachers. Often this was viewed as the sole purpose of the PTA Meetings. However, in recent years attendance at our PTA meetings has declined drastically. So, the number of meetings has been shortened to only three a year. Also, when parents and teachers do attend, they are anxious to "cut-out" as soon as the business meeting s over. such situations do little to foster mutual understanding between parents and teachers. And often it is the child whosuffers from the lack of communication between parents and teachers.Without understanding, parents do not know the teachers expectations for the child and the teacher is not aware of parental expectations. Consequently, the child can be caught in the middle, for when teacher and parent values differ, the child can become confused and anxious and thus do less than his best at school. Thus, by communicating more often with parents, thewriter hoped to not only better understand the child's position at home, but also give the parents a better idea of what both the child and the teacher were doing at school. Thus, the parents and teacher, through mutual communication and understanding, should be able to facilitate the child's learning whereby he would be apt to make better grades. Therefore, the problem was to increase the child's efficiency at school by communicating more often with the parents.
