Abstract

This project led to an increased understanding in past inner-city trends, revitalization strategies, and the possible location of large discount retailers. Discount retailers can act as a catalyst for urban redevelopment while serving several important functions. Research indicates such stores provide needed infill development, job creation, increased employment skills and training, increased economic outlook to generate increase development, and familiar retail choices to suburban residents interested in locating to urban areas. Criteria are established in this project to guide, assist, and help successfully locate urban discount retailers.Finally to illustrate how a retailer can fit into an urban context an appendix examines a community in the City of Indianapolis. A site is examined to determine appropriate design and neighborhood spending characteristics.
