Abstract

With the passage of the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) in 1910, it became necessary for all businesses engaged in interstate commerce to examine their ambient noise levels and provide a hearing conservation program if noise levels are sufficiently high. An essential part of a hearing conservation program is audiometric testing. It is the intent of this researcher to measure ambient noise levels in several local industries to determine if a hearing conservation program is necessary. A program is warranted to further evaluate ambient noise in areas which may be suitable for audiometric testing without the benefit of a sound treated room according to ANSI standard 3.3.1-1960.These measurements will be made in two ways: first, direct readings will be made from a sound pressure level meter; second, a tape recording will be made for analysis at a later date. The purpose of this tape analysis will be to determine if noise surveys can be accurately conducted using only a portable tape recorder.
