Abstract:
Currently there is no manual or book that describes plants native to Indiana that have edible properties. This manual was written to provide a resource on edible plants of Indiana available in an easy to understand format. Plants native to Indiana were identified by reference to books published by Charles Deam and through the United States Department of Agriculture plant database. Native Indiana plants were then cross-checked with several references, such as Cornucopia II by Stephen Facciola (1998), Sturtevant's edible plants of the world edited by U. P. Hedrick (1972), and the online database Plants for a future (2006) to determine their edible properties. Subsequently, 75 out of 200+ plants were included in the manual. The manual is 7 inches wide by 81/2 inches high. The manual contains: scientific and common names, photographs, basic descriptions, optimum growing conditions, edible uses, and other relevant information about each plant.
