Abstract:
The focus of this project was to assess the accessibility of the Ball State University campus for people with disabilities. Specifically, accessible parking was assessed and audited in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines. The purpose of the audit was to determine the level of accessible parking for people with disabilities. This project utilized existing literature on the college mission, changing demographics on college campuses, the existing laws that support accessibility, and the definition of disability. The purpose of the project was to assist Ball State University in better serving the needs of their students, as well as the faculty and staff, with disabilities. The limitation of this project was the scope of the audit. The audit assessed the accessible parking on campus and did not assess the entrances to, and interiors of, the existing buildings on campus. The intended outcome of the project was threefold: to provide information on readily achievable barrier removal for people with disabilities; assist Ball State University in limiting potential legal liability; ensure people with disabilities will have access to the services offered by Ball State University.
