Abstract:
The purpose of this project was to develop a seminar model for a multicultural competency course for student affairs graduate students at four-year, predominantly white institutions of higher education. Modeled after the Student Affairs Administration in Higher Education Master's degree program at Ball State University, this model can also be modified to work for other similar graduate programs, such as Higher Education Administration or College Student Personnel. This plan was created through a thorough review of literature and conference presentations related to the topic of multicultural competency and the teaching of this competency. This five week seminar model will present a multicultural core competency model to graduate students in student affairs who wish to prepare for working with the diverse population of today's colleges and universities. Students will complete the course having developed their own multicultural core competency model for use in their first years employed in the student affairs profession.
