Abstract:
Two profoundly retarded adults who reside in a state institution for the developmentally disabled displayed incessant self-stimulatory verbalizations. These verbalizations interfered with attempts to establish language training programs for theca. Treatment consisted of the use of white noise administered through earphones contingent upon inappropriate verbalizations. The verbalizations of one resident were reduced substantially; the verbalizations of the other were reduced, but not below an average of 39 of the time in treatment.
