Abstract:
This paper is an attempt to identify if them are class differences between lover and middle class sixth graders' perceptions of occupation. Much study is currently being devoted to lower class behavior and attitudes. The federal government has numerous programs with varied objectived directed to the lower class. Social reforms dealing with its problems of this strata have taken on greater significance recently. Looking at our citizens of the future, the children of today, this study undertakes to determine whether or not they already perceive class differences.The study was based upon a common measure of status, that being occupation. This study was Intended to shed light on such questions as the following: 1. How do sixth grade children rank occupations they admire? 2. How do sixth grade children rank occupations in termsof what they would like to become? 3. What independent variables affect these rankings? 4. Specifically, how do children perceive autonomy, responsibility, and training? 5. Is there a difference between the occupations they adore and the occupations they want to achieve? 6. How does each class's perception of occupation compare with the North-Hatt scale? These are the general questions probed in this paper.
