Abstract:
The significance of a county's newspaper to its local history is immeasurable. And the history of individual county newspapers is invaluable to the history of journalism in the state. Research is presently being done in Indiana to add to the knowledge of its journalism history. It is hoped that this brief history of the Rushville Jacksonian will contribute to the history of newspapers in Rush County, Indiana. It is the purpose of this paper to outline who the editors and owners were, and to determine their contribution to Rush County's journalistic history. The study focuses primarily on editorial policies and mechanical changes in the layout of the paper that occurred over the years. The Jacksonian was chosen for examination for several reasons. Since it ceased publication nearly sixty years ago, less is known about it than its one-tine rival, the Rushville Republican which is still in existence. Also, the Jacksonian was the only other major paper in the county seat of Rushville. Finally, it was chosen because it was the organ of the county Democratic Party which rarely had a county victory after the Republicans come into existence.
