Abstract

This as an action research study designed to determine if positive motivational techniques by coaches influence the achievement of junior college basketball players. Surveys were used to determine if athletes perceived that positive motivational and coaching strategies were used during the project. Goal identification prior to the research, and player evaluations throughout the project were used to determine player achievement levels. Players also assessed the motivational strategies used by the coaches in this project. The researcher compared the information collected from the athletes and coaches to determine if positive motivation helps increase player achievement. The data collected showed that coaches do positively effect motivation. There were significant results that showed motivation effected player achievement, which correlates with findings from previous studies. But, there was not a significant relationship of positive coaching techniques with athletic achievement in this project. These findings were discussed and suggestions for future research are also given.
