The newspaper is an integral part of the everyday lives of the American people and as an immediate and permanent record of today's happenings, it should be incorporated as a tool within the classroom. Although the newspaper is readily available to most classrooms, techniques for using this valuable tool are not being utilized. Innovations in audio-visual usage are greatly encouraged by educators; yet, the most obvious example, the newspaper, is often overlooked.With a credible amount of ingenuity and creativity, the newspaper can be applied to every high school course; thereby, providing the individual student with the opportunity to better relate to his total subject material.Due to their training and educational background, it is generally known that journalism teachers are prolific users of the newspaper in the classroom. With this thought in mind, the writer determined to find out through research the extent of usage of the newspaper in the classroom of non-journalism teachers as compared to journalism teachers.The problem, then, is to determine to what extent the newspaper is used in both journalism and non-journalism classes. An additional purpose of this research project is to provide a supplementary teaching unit for non-journalism courses.Although the writer acknowledges the fact that the newspaper can and should be used as a teaching media in every high school classroom, limitations of this research paper must be met. Therefore, the research conducted will deal with two subject areas this writer considers most condusive to effective newspaper utilization: English and Social Studies.
