This paper has presented a comprehensive review of polyethylene melt fracture and process parameters that affect melt fracture. It is generally speculated and believed that surface melt fracture is related to the wall slip. The adhesive breakdown of polymer/wall interface at the die land causes the melt to slip. Many researchers have used the slip model to interpret experimental data. Surface melt fracture and wall slip are influenced by several process parameters, such as molecular weight, molecular weight distribution, temperature, pressure, LID ratio of the capillary or L/H ratio of slit, and interface conditions. Also this paper includes a short review of the stick-slip and gross melt fracture phenomena.
