Developmental profiles : parent's ratings vs. teacher's ratings on the Alpern-Boll Developmental Profile / Gerald Goldstone and Ellen Norman.

Abstract

This study was conducted for the purpose of examining the degree of agreement between parent's and teacher's evaluations of a child's developmental skills. The means by which each child was evaluated was the Alpern-Boll Developmental Inventory. Previous work dealing with the validity of the Alpern-Boll Inventory was done by Alpern and Boll, (1971), in which the mother's evaluation of her child was compared to a direct test derived from the inventory which was given to the child. Data for the present study was collected at Crossroads Rehabilitation Center. Subjects were between the age of 6 months and 6 years-4 months. A t-test for related samples was used to compare the parent's evaluations and the teacher's evaluations. It was hypothesized that there would be a statistically significant difference between the two evaluations. It was further hypothesized that the parent's evaluation would tend to be higher in most areas than the teacher's evaluations. The results supported the hypothesis showing a significant difference in two areas of the profile. These areas were Physical Age, t(36)-3.31 p .05, and in the area of Social Age, t(36)-3.18 p .05.
