Abstract:
Progressive changes have taken place in the field of biology in the last few years as in other fields. Each year information has increased at an astronomical rate and demands of our society have increased accordingly. Younger and older teachers alike have been plagued by the problem of trying to upgrade teaching in their fields. In this study an attempt was made to evaluate the possibility of upgrading biology courses in the schools of Jay County, Indiana. The problem of the study was two-fold in nature. First the writer attempted to define what constitutes an up-to-date course in biology and to determine what was being taught in the schools of Jay County. Secondly an attempt was made to identify problems connected with changing to an up-to-date course and to develop recommendations for implementing BSCS (Biological Sciences Curriculum Study) biology in these schools. All of the schools studied were different in quantity and quality, ranging from less than one hundred to over six hundred pupils in size. Teachers had varied backgrounds. Schools were completely rural to almost completely urban. Buildings were all older type structures.
