Abstract:
In today's society, wetlands are viewed as wet, wastelands that have no purpose to society unless it is drained and farmed on, or filled and built on. Because wetlands are viewed so negatively, every year we loose hundreds of thousands of acres of this vital natural resource. The main reason for this lose is the lack of education on the values and beauty of wetlands. Without an educational program on wetlands, we will keep loosing this valuable resource each year. The Culver Academy Wetland is going to be a starting point for this educational program. Culver Academy Wetland is going to combine wetlands with an interpretive center where people will be able to come and ask questions about wetlands, learn about what wetlands can do for the environment, and then be able to actually go out and walk around and through wetlands. The wetland center will have a variety of different wetlands, from natural wetland pockets, to man-made wetlands, to wetlands created by beavers.Because Culver Academy Wetland will be a comprehensive wetland learning center, it will become a very important element in the public education on wetlands. Once people begin to learn the importance of this disappearing natural resource, they will beginning working toward saving them for future generations.
