There is a topic in science that is hard to teach. What makes it hard to teach is there are few examples of it that can be shown in the classroom? Students have to sit and listen to a lecture about some ideas that they have trouble relating to. Because of the difficulty of getting students involved and excited about the topic this area is usually just mentioned and then it is time to move on to the next section. This skimming over of the topic leaves students confused and with many misconceptions. This overlooked area is the topic of Cold Science. My creative project will address this problem. The method of correcting this problem will be to take this topic that is briefly mentioned and does not relate to the students and turn it into a unit that contains class discussion, labs and demonstrations. This will be accomplished in several parts. First student's interests will be stimulated by discussing misconceptions they have in cold science areas. These topics will include areas that the students find interesting and relate to them. Second labs will be developed that relate to the class discussion. The process of fractional distillation to obtain cold science liquids will be discussed then students will perform a lab using fractional distillation. Third everyday uses of cold science and how these temperatures are obtained will be discussed. Last the unit will contain a spectacular demonstration show using liquid nitrogen to reinforce and demonstrate the topics discussed in the unit.
