Holography has such a brief history that many, if not most people do not know what it is. The basic idea started back in 1947 with Dr. Dennis Gabor. Gabor was working on improving the resolving power of the electron microscope. He began his experiments in 1948, and was unable to produce quality holograms because he did not have a source of coherent light. By about 1955, Dr. Gabor had dismissed his invention as one of his many failures. The laser was developed in the early 60's, and provided a coherent light. E. N. Leith, J. Upatnieks, and G. W. Stroke at the University of Michigan began to experiment with the new light source and applied it to the earlier principles of holography developed by Dr. Gabor. Leith, Upatnieks, and Stroke are considered the pioneers of holography. Many people feel that it takes at least thirty years before the general public becomes aware of and accepts an invention. It has been a little over thirty years since the conception of holography in 1947. Historically the artist has borrowed the tools the scientist has developed. Is the time ripe for the artist to adopt this relatively new invention as a means to create new and exciting images? If it is decided to use holography as a new artistic graphic medium, then it follows that these new techniques should be taught to today's youth. They will certainly be the artists of tomorrow.
