Although psychotherapy with children is a relatively new field of study, many techniques have already been developed. To the new therapist or the student studying clinical psychology, a background in psycotherapy with children is invaluable. Many differences in the personality of the child and the personality of the adult force the therapist to use different techniques in treating disorders in children. To understand psychotherapy with children, the therapist first needs to learn the history of therapeutic techniques with children. The therapist next needs to understand the difference between children and adults necessitating the different procedures. Since play is used by most child therapists, a background in play theories, uses of play as a diagnostic tool, and the use of play as therapy also needs investigation. The therapist should also acquaint himself with the procedures used in working with a child in a child guidance clinic. Finally, a study of the major therapists techniques with a detailed study of one of these techniques would round out the therapists background into psychotherapy with children.
