dc.description.abstract The problem was to design a minimum security adult rehabilitation center for 432 inmates. The site is located in Fort Wayne, Indiana and is one of eight proposed sites selected on the basis of community need, economics, and population. The problem here is to create an enriched educational environment which will supplement the inmates education while rehabilitating him, thus preparing him for reintegration into the community. The solution was accomplished by creating a highly condensed educational environment. This consists of a linear spine, which is a two and three story space with the active areas on levels one and two, while the quiet areas and offices are located on levels two and three. The major entrance into the spine is centrally located on the north side. Also, in this area is the administration and maximum security holding areas, The housing and counselors are located above the spine area, thus assuring maximum contact with the educational spaces whenever leaving the living areas.Around the building are large open spaces which work in conjunction with the spine to create a feeling of openess. The prospective inmates are to be trusted completely as an integral part of the rehabilitation process. Therefore the relationship between the inmate and the site is of prime important concern, since it is expected that the inmate will spend much of his time utilizing the site during free hours.
