Abstract:
Computer use has increased in the healthcare system and nurses are required to gain computer skills to improve efficiency in documentation. A number of variables, such as knowledge, motivation, and beliefs may influence the nurses' effective use of computers in healthcare settings (Burkes, 1991).The purpose of this study is to examine relationships of nurses' satisfaction, beliefs, motivation, and computer use in the hospital setting. This study is a replication of Burkes' (1991) study using Vroom's Expectancy Theory (1964) as the framework. The study will be conducted at an acute care hospital in southeast Indiana that utilizes computerized documentation. It is anticipated that 100 nurses will participate in the study. Participants will be registered nurses from all units in the hospital who currently use computerized documentation and agree to participate. The study will be approved by Ball State University Institutional review board and the participating hospital.A questionnaire designed by Burkes (1991) will be administered to all nurses who agree to participate. Findings will provide information on factors that impact a hospital's computerized documentation system. The findings of this study may have significant implications for successful implementation of computerized documentation into healthcare settings.
