Abstract:
Social activism is a new industrial policy calling for participation by industry in attacking a broad range of social problems. Industry is an important part of the total society and has an obligation both to its own future and to the future of society to become involved in the business of repairing the nation's social machinery. The objectives of social activismare: (1) to control pollution, (2) to end environmental ugliness, (3) to aid education, (4) to employ the handicapped, (5) to share corporate skill and resources, (6) to satisfy human needs of employees.I chose to design an industrial building that would meet these objectives. The project is hypothetical and the site was chosen solely because of the difficulties it presents to a designer. It was my intent as a student to: (1) develop ability to manage a project of size and complexity on a difficult site, (2) investigate architectural ramifications of social activism, (3) challenge traditional methods of factory design.
