dc.description.abstract The Center for Innovative Technology (CIT) project was originally executed Winter Quarter for a design competition. Architecture professor Dr. Bruce F. Meyer teamed with me in the effort. Our design solution was a pure extension of "the description set" in an effort to test the idea. Spring Quarter I developed the project further in model form to design in 4D and to represent the complexity of the project in a simplified abstraction of images.The Center for Innovative Technology is to serve many purposes, all of which will be evolving in scope unpredictably over time. The specific roles they take range from the adminstrative to the spiritual and from technical incubation to promotional marketing. CIT is the symbolic and literal interpretation of the State of Virginia's stake in the future. It is also the moment where government, academia and industry come together as a team dedicated to advancing the quality of life by developing and applying technology.The search was for an expandable architectural language based on technology and its theoretical future, while simultaneously evocative of functional motives expressed above. The early notions about what the CIT was to be conceptually were about the accessof technology and its potential to benefit people by improving the way of life.In this country, the majority of the population is touched by some kind of advancing technology. The participants are somewhat divided however, on whether or not the progress is helping them. The CIT would work to benefit both sides of the fence. It would provide an inspiring community in which students, educators, and business could help themselves throught research, development, and exhibitions. Those who wish to learn about the role of past, present, and future technology could easily gain access to the exhibition of products, techniques, and information. The architecture responds by being part of this experience as the symbol of metamorphic technology. It is power, grace, and permanence while indicating that it retains the flexibility of choice. Add, subtract, multiply, and divide the set.
