Abstract:
On March 24, 1976, Federal Judge S. Hugh Dillin set in motion a major restructuring within the Marion County Jail System. Judge Dillin ruled that the present jail was deficient in many areas, notably inmate recreation facilities, both indoor and outdoor, and medical facilities. With these court ordered changes, a remodel and expansion of the current facility is inevitable. This project concerns that remodel and expansion. The court issued statement scratched the surface of how far behind the Marion County Jail is in relation to today's progressive concepts in correctional institution design. My duty as a designer was to investigate the facility and determine all of the needs and future vase. This included a complete programming of the Marion County Sheriff's offices in anticipation of a design solution suggesting a total move from the jail building to a new extension and a reprogramming of the jail areas I found through research to be lacking in physical area or in need of reorganization.Hopefully, this program will guide me through the initial schematic phase and then the design phase. This is the beginning of what should lead to the re-structuring of the Marion County Jail system and Sheriff's department into a complete, conceptually modern facility.
