Abstract:
The plight of the homeless in America represents the most severe housing problem since the great depression. Although the roads to homelessness are very diverse (economic conditions, governmental policies, urban gentrification, social occurrances), the need to establish a universal attitude is vital. The project is intended to explore the potential of architecture and its relationship to an overall answer to the crisis. It is important that we realize initially that the problem is multi-dimensional, and architecture is a catalyst and at the same time a wholistic instrument for an approach to the exigency of the homeless. This thesis will explore how architecture can help the homeless of Indianapolis. The major concern is to develop a quality architecture that creates and establishes an attitude of how architects and architecture can begin to address the needs of the homeless.
