Abstract

The past five years I have spent studying to become an elementary school teacher. The courses I have taken, professors who have taught me, friends I have met, and experiences I have had all had a profound effect on my life. As I began to consider my senior Honors Thesis, I wanted to pursue a Thesis that incorporated the most important aspects of myself and the learning I have experienced during my time at Ball State.Throughout my college career I have become more and more aware of my passion for helping people, especially children. I have been blessed with a variety of opportunities to work with children. Considering these experiences and what I have learned through each experience, I began to imagine a design that could provide educational as well as therapeutic benefits for children. I focused the idea towards abandoned children, due to my passion for working with children who have special needs. This thesis explains the specific needs of abandoned children an explores possibilities of educational and therapeutic spaces that could meet those needs. The space is to be called an "Outdoor Edutheraplay Center."
