Abstract:
This paper has as its purpose to reveal the basic principles involved in the linguistic approach to teaching reading and to discuss both its advantages and disadvantages. Some of the well-known writers such as Carl Lefevre, C. C. Fries, Clarence Barnhart, etc. will be discussed and their theories reviewed. Since linguists have much to say to the classroom teacher, this paper shall also include ideas to be utilized in the teaching situation which are directly related to the linguistic approach.
