Abstract
Abortion is the type of controversial issue that never seems to leave the spotlight. Ever since the first anti-abortion laws were written in the 1840s, there has been pushback from the pro-choice movement. The movement has changed drastically since then, with the rise of the internet and social media being the catalyst for a lot of that change. This paper is a comparison of the prochoice movement of the 1970s and 80s with the pro-choice movement of today. It specifically focuses on the changes that social media has kickstarted and looks at how social media has made the movement more accessible by changing the way people communicate and information spreads, as well as how it has broken barriers based on race and class. Lastly, it offers some perspective on the future of the movement and how social media will continue to play a role as it becomes a major part of more and more people’s lives.
