Abstract
This project gives an insight from a different angle on the Ciaccona from the d minor Partita for Solo Violin. Hidden chorales are presented throughout the Ciaccona, and give an overview about Bach’s emotional state while writing this monumental piece. By understanding the unspoken text passages, as well as being aware of how chorale melodies are spread among the multiple lines within the chords, this gives the performer as well as the audience the opportunity to experience the work in a different dimension. This project applied ideas proposed in Dr. Helga Thoene’s book Johann Sebastian Bach. Ciaccona: Tanz oder Tombeau. She specializes in numerology, symbolism, and some historical aspects in Bach’s music.
