Abstract
In contemporary poetry, many poets release collections that are unified only by a general overarching theme or vague stylistic similarities. It is far less common to find a collection that functions cohesively as a single piece, one in which the poet carries a particular idea or motif through the entirety of the book. In this short collection, Cormac McCarthy Orders Cheeseburger, I present several poems that are all unified in their expression of the same theme, structure, and poetic gimmick. All of the pieces included in this thesis are built around the same idea taking imitations of established literary figures and placing them in situations that are uncharacteristically mundane or crass. The poems all explore ideas about what constitutes “highbrow" and "lowbrow" poetry, the use of irony, and poetry as humor.
